What is the difference between active and passive voice

Active voice shows the subject performing the action, while passive voice shows the subject receiving the action. Active sentences are usually shorter and clearer, whereas passive sentences can hide the doer or emphasize the result.

English · Grammar

In English, the verb voice tells the reader who is doing what. When the subject acts, the sentence is in active voice. When the subject is acted upon, the sentence is in passive voice. Recognizing the switch helps you control focus and style.

Active Voice

An active‑voice sentence places the doer before the verb and the object after it. The structure follows a clear Subject‑Verb‑Object order, such as "The researcher analyzed the data." This format makes the sentence direct and easy to understand. Active voice also tends to use fewer auxiliary verbs, keeping the wording concise.

Passive Voice

A passive‑voice sentence flips the order so that the receiver of the action appears first. The typical pattern is Subject‑Form of "to be"‑Past Participle‑(by Agent). For example, "The data were analyzed by the researcher." The agent can be omitted, yielding "The data were analyzed." Passive voice is useful when the actor is unknown, irrelevant, or less important than the action itself.

Key differences between active and passive voice:

  • Active puts the doer first; passive puts the receiver first
  • Active uses simple verb forms; passive adds a form of "to be" plus a past participle
  • Active often sounds more direct; passive can sound more formal or vague

How to change an active sentence to passive:

  1. 1Identify the object of the active sentence; it will become the new subject
  2. 2Choose the appropriate form of "to be" for the tense (am, is, are, was, were, etc.)
  3. 3Add the past participle of the main verb
  4. 4Optionally add the original subject after "by"

Side‑by‑side comparison of an active and its passive counterpart:
