What is the difference between transcription and translation
Transcription copies DNA into messenger RNA, while translation reads that mRNA to assemble a protein. Transcription occurs in the nucleus (or cytoplasm of prokaryotes) and produces a single‑stranded RNA; translation takes place on ribosomes in the cytoplasm and builds a polypeptide chain from codons.

Transcription and translation are the two core stages of gene expression. In transcription, the enzyme RNA polymerase reads a DNA template strand and synthesizes a complementary mRNA molecule. In translation, ribosomal subunits bind to the mRNA, decode its codons, and join the appropriate amino acids into a protein.

During transcription, a DNA segment such as 5'-ATG CCT GAA‑3' is read by RNA polymerase, which adds complementary ribonucleotides, yielding the mRNA strand 5'-AUG CCU GAA‑3'. This mRNA now carries the genetic code out of the nucleus. The process ends when a poly‑A tail is added and the transcript is released.
Translation Process
Steps a ribosome follows to make a protein

- 2Elongation: tRNA anticodons pair with each codon, adding amino acids
- 3Termination: a stop codon (UAA, UAG, UGA) triggers release of the polypeptide
Using the mRNA from the example, the ribosome reads the first codon AUG, which codes for methionine, then CCU for proline, and finally GAA for glutamic acid. The resulting tripeptide has the sequence Met‑Pro‑Glu. Each addition releases a molecule of pyrophosphate, providing the energy that drives chain growth.
