Why does current stay the same in a series circuit

In a series circuit the same current flows through every component because there is only one continuous path for charge; the same amount of charge that leaves the source must return through each element. Conservation of charge forces the current to be identical at all points in the loop.

A series circuit consists of components connected end‑to‑end so that there is exactly one path for electrons to travel. When the battery pushes charge into the loop, the same number of electrons must pass through each resistor, bulb, or motor before returning to the source. This single‑path condition guarantees that the current is uniform throughout the circuit.

Why the current cannot split

Current cannot branch in a series arrangement because there is nowhere for excess charge to go. Kirchhoff’s Current Law states that the algebraic sum of currents at any node is zero; in a series loop there are no nodes where a split could occur. Consequently, the magnitude of the current that leaves the battery is the magnitude that enters the next component, and so on.

How to verify the current is the same experimentally

  1. 1Connect a single‑loop circuit with a battery and two resistors in series

Worked example: A 12 V battery powers a 4 Ω resistor (R₁) and a 6 Ω resistor (R₂) in series. The total resistance is Rₜ = 4 Ω + 6 Ω = 10 Ω, so the current is I = V / Rₜ = 12 V / 10 Ω = 1.2 A. Because the current is the same through each resistor, the voltage drop across R₁ is V₁ = I·R₁ = 1.2 A·4 Ω = 4.8 V, and across R₂ it is V₂ = I·R₂ = 1.2 A·6 Ω = 7.2 V. Adding the drops (4.8 V + 7.2 V) returns the source voltage, confirming the current uniformity.
